This month I've been reworking this piece that I started in November last year. It started out as a really loose and abstracted (and unplanned) still life. It took three months of facing the wall and then a few weeks of slow tweaking, until something more my style emerged. This is my favourite way to paint! Lots of consideration and intentional decisions after the flurry of an intuitive first layer (does that make sense?!).

This one was absolutely the definition of trust the process.

I have a little collection of vintage or thrifted vases that I always use in my still life pieces - the proportions and shape of the vase always changes, but the idea is there

Going back to an old favourite size to work on - 30x30cm! It's been a year since I finished up my long running sunday still life series and some weeks I really miss it

Let's rework this painting!

I started this one in November last year and it just wasn't working. It's always worth putting yourself outside your comfort zone and I really pushed for a different composition, a bold underpainting and wacky abstracted florals. And it wasn't working. So instead of pushing through, I packed it away for three months.

Fast forward to now, and Monthly Muse has been dedicated to reworking this painting again. I love giving paintings the space they need to then finish later. In the light of a new month, I knew I needed to refine the colour palette, alter the composition (it was too top heavy), and keep just enough of the wacky underpainting.

I hope you enjoy watching it progress into something more my style.

Drawing up my next commission which is on the easel for this week (and a few more after that). The starting point for the brief, was to include spikey banksia leaves, so I consulted my favourite reference book from @bush.flowers 🌿

Imagine painting here all day, but instead of looking out over rolling hills, it's on the beach at Yeppoon!

In June, Kate and I are bringing @bloom_art_experiences to Central Queensland, where we will be painting flowers all day, right next to the ocean at @seaspray_yeppoon. You could even make a weekend of it and stay in one of the renovated rooms of the retro motel that is Seaspray (participants get a discounted stay).

We always have so much fun, and this time local artist @aleishahobson_art is joining us!

@barnardos_au host this art auction every year, with pieces donated by Australian artists, to raise money for children and youth facing homelessness.

The gratitude I felt of being able to duck off to the studio, my safe space, even for short stints, was not lost on me. A little gum blossom still life (my favourite sort of painting to create) on my paint splattered floor. There is a good reason I chose terrazzo tiles for this space 🙈

Over the last three weeks I was lucky enough to do some figurative painting classes with @dylanjonesart. My husband surprised me with these for my birthday - such a good present!

Dylan is a really exceptional Brisbane artist and it was so great to paint in his studio and pick his brains about painting figures, colour mixing and creating loose brush work in oils. These were two out of the three pieces I completed.

It was a great way to push myself out of my comfort zone and now I've found another avenue of painting I would love to continue experimenting with (now I just need to find models)

I haven't posted a full start to finish video in a while!

Probably 80% of my paintings usually start with a sketch and a relatively planned colour palette, but I decided to make this one up as I went along. It's super freeing to shake up studio routines every once in a while

Two biggies that I'm currently working on for @affordableartfairau, May 8-11 with @keap_collective

Each of these paintings will be about 96x126cm once framed and I'll sell them individually or together (if someone has a mammoth wall they need filling).

I decided today these will probably be titled GENESIS because they are loosely based off my first painting that I ever sold (to someone that I didn't know) back in 2019 (swipe to see which one!)

I've claimed this year as my year of landscapes, and I'm really loving going back through old sketches and ideas to create this next body of work. An interesting composition, loose layering of brushstrokes and earthy colours are the things I really focus on when I'm painting.

Here is a little story behind this really sentimental house painting:

It's actually my family home! My parents owned this house for nearly 30 years and recently sold it to start a new chapter in their lives. Their very thoughtful agents Sandie and Jasmine from @sandie_edwardsandcoproperty commissioned me to paint this as a surprise for them, to gift on settlement day. I promised Mum I wouldn't post the video of her opening it - but the tears were flowing from us all 🥹

I can remember every single change this house went through and my three siblings and I (and extended family) have the best memories here of playing outside from breakfast until it was dark, painting in the backyard, swimming in the pool, riding our bikes, eating from the grape vine around the side of the house, making tree houses, spying on all the cars that came into the street and playing with our neighbours. A really beautiful childhood.

I'm so happy my parents can now take a little memento of our family home - painted as it looked on the day they sold it (so much hard work over the years), with us four siblings as kids playing in the yard. Thank you Sandie for the opportunity to create something so incredibly special.

No words can describe the magic that is @captainsrest. I feel so incredibly lucky to have stayed here for two nights: having the opportunity to soak up the wild west of Tasmania and paint away within the walls of such a special place.

A night's stay at @moontidetasmania at Greens Beach 💚

After running our art retreat at @enclave.tasmania, @katequinnart and I were very generously gifted a stay at this beautiful air bnb on the north coast of Tassie for a night!

We spent a bit of time soaking in the laid back beach town and then I sat on the front deck and painted one of the little floral arrangements - I left it on the mantel piece next to all the little vintage finds that Jo has collected.

I tried to capture all of the tiny details that have gone into curating this beautiful place. Thank you so much for your generosity Jo!

It's really hard to summarise how incredible our first art retreat for @bloom_art_experiences this week was. A group of 16 students arrived at the amazing @enclave.tasmania in Winnaleah (North East Tassie) on Monday evening, and we left them on Thursday.

@katequinnart and I always say how lucky we are to attract such beautiful students to all of our Blooms - and this one even exceeded our expectations. We are so grateful to the supportive, fun and inclusive group of women we just spent those few days with. They spent the whole time uplifting each other and supporting one another through our activities and painting time. We routinely heard them all cackling in the group lounge room after class 🥹

Gill and Steve from Enclave really made the whole experience of running a retreat so easy and have such an incredible eye for detail and are friendly, welcoming hosts who can cook a delicious meal. We will absolutely be back, thank you!

Now to spend the rest of the week galavanting and painting our way around Tassie. Feeling so so very lucky

Goal for 2025: create a body of work which has landscapes, still life and all over floral paintings. Now underway! These works are all destined for the @affordableartfairau in Brisbane in May.

I'm so excited to be joining forces with @katequinnart, @adelebevacquaart and @pia.kuykhoven.artist as the artist collective @keap_collective for the art fair. It's going to be fun (but I'm also already stressing about the deadlines..)

I feel like it's been a long time coming to bring my different styles and subject matters together in one body of work. Now the challenge begins of creating a cohesive group of paintings..

I'm making the most of a sick day in bed today, to reflect on this year (as I usually just forge ahead into the next one).

2024 has been really tough for small businesses; it has felt a bit grindy, with a lot of hustle and worry in the unknown, as many of you would know. But I wanted to write down all of the seemingly little things that I achieved this year, as an act of gratitude, and to share some of them with you.

- I celebrated five years of painting full time
- I finished up my Sunday still life series that had been running for four years and really kick started my whole painting practice
- I then transitioned to a monthly release, which has encouraged me to experiment more in my work than I ever have
- I painted some of my best and some of my worst paintings ever this year
- I painted my largest landscape and still life paintings that I ever had
- I worked on the best commissions for the most lovely recipients (commissions were my main thing this year)
- @katequinnart and I travelled to some amazing places for @bloom_art_experiences and released our online courses (that's a huge one actually!)
- Played a small part in a @dangerousfemales
artist tee for DV
- I was lucky enough to do some beautiful art swaps
- I finally started a little garden! That I have completely bumbled my way through, but I've managed to grow a couple of flowers and precisely one zucchini

There were no big shows, no massive collabs, nothing crazy - just an accumulation of lots of meaningful pieces and a profound sense of gratitude that I'm still doing this full time.

Of course, such a big thank you to you all for being here. Your support is something I don't take for granted.

This was a recent landscape commission that was a long time in the making. @pensmallart helped her friend Duncan organise this surprise painting for his wife Jenny: of her favourite golf course in Scotland, @shiskinegolfclub.

We started chatting and planning this in July : and the painting was hung by Penny, her husband and Duncan, as a surprise, ready to see when Jenny came home from work one day. Incredible!

I was completely honoured to bring this piece to life (it is 1x1.5m big, so it's hard to show through photos, but the second photo shows it hanging). What an amazing and thoughtful gift!

I'll post some behind the scenes process tomorrow - but if you swipe, you'll see I had two little sets of hands 'helping' me at the very start

My (nearly) four year old wanted to take a video of me and ask some questions while we were in the studio together on the weekend. She was working on a rainbow painting and I was working on photographing some flower arrangements for our upcoming @bloom_art_experiences workshop retreat in Tassie.
